What We Do

What is Podiatry? (And why I do it...)

When people ask me "So Peter, what do you do?" I brace myself for the inevitable response I reply with a smile "Oh, I am a Podiatrist". Normally 1 of 3 things happens. The asker looks at me and says – that’s with kids’ right? Yes, but your thinking of a paediatrician. If they don’t ask that I get a blank stare and the next phrase – what’s that? Or finally, if I am really lucky the asker then says Podiatrist – that’s with feet right? I have a foot pain tell me what’s wrong

Lucky for all those people – I love what I do. Podiatry is treatment of foot pain. However, it is much, much more than that. Many people don’t realise that we can also assist in the treatment of most conditions from the hips all the way down to the toes. The body, especially the lower limb, cannot be looked at as separate bones or joints. The foot is connected to the lower leg which is connected to the knee, the thigh and so on. To treat each area individually is a mistake and means that you will not treat it successfully. It must be considered a functioning unit and be treated like one. So if you find you have any problems with your hips, legs, or feet then your podiatrist is a great place to start.
